One of the fundamental topics within graphic design, format represents the physical point of contact with the user. Basics Design 01: Format examines established format standards and demonstrates how a creative approach to format selection and presentation space can produce dramatic results in both print and digital media. New material in this edition includes a new chapter, focusing on on-screen, online and moving image, and much of the content has been updated and restructured.
Review: One of the things I have really enjoyed about AVA's books is the selection of images and the various types of paper employed. Not only do your books house valuable content, the content is presented well with great photography - the angle shots, close-ups, etc. I currently use AVA's "Basics Design: Format "and "Print and Finish "for my two senior production courses. The heavy use of images with tight definitions and commentary appeal to the students and the type of examples selected by the authors inspire stronger design solutions. * Elsi Vassdal Ellis, Western Washington University, USA (first edition) *
Extremely visually clear book. Excellent variety of formats succinctly explained; all very inspiring. This is perfect for providing our students with ideas on how to present portfolios/design reports and even CVs...instead of the usual boring format of bound plastic sheets. * Richard Frankland, University of Salford, UK *
A strong supplementary book for both support of session tasks and case studies. I would recommend purchasing Layout as a companion in order to understand and take full advantage of the methodolgies behind format within graphic design. * Richard Johnson, New College Nottingham, UK *
The book Basic Design 01: Format, talks about the key ingredients of format. These are Purpose and narrative, Printed media, Construction, Identity and branding, Shape and form, and New media. For students this book is very clear written and full of good examples. It teaches the junior designer to look beyond the obvious. For instance different types of folding a brochure, to make it stand out of the crowd. Also has each chapter its own sub-chapters, for example, under Identity and branding you will learn about shape and form and materials. But also about adding value for the customer. The writers explain how the feel of printed items has an effect on how we respond to them and on how we build a sense identity and brand. Each chapter is flawlessly comprehensive and the pictures, diagrams and photographs make this book a must for any designer who is looking to fully understand the essential skills required for formatting. Because of the number of examples given in the book, a student will not have any problems reading it and be lost in jargon. -- Celine Duijndam, Hogeschool Rotterdam, The Netherlands
